In this unit, I learned that teaching receptive skills is similar in many ways to teaching reading and listening skills to young, native English speakers; it is important to vary the topics and materials of the lessons so as to gain the interest and motivation of the students both in a native English classroom and an English as a foreign language classroom. According to the text for this unit, it is also important to pre-teach a small selection of vocabulary words that will be vital for students to know in the study phase of an ESA lesson, which is also necessary to do before presenting material to young students who may not be familiar with some of the vocabulary that will come up later in the lesson. I also realized that, as I have experienced in learning another language, it is easier to understand written text in the other language than it is to understand spoken words. The reason for this, which is covered in this unit, also makes sense--when we listen, we only hear the words once or twice, so we have less time to deduce the meaning than if the words are "captured" on a page, as the text puts it, and we are able to read it as many times as we need to in order to decipher the meaning.
