This unit explains to the teachers different ways of evaluating studnets' levels and progress. The teacher can assess students through a number of ways and these include Tutorials, evaluation by students and through tests. Testing students can further be sub-divided into;
Placement tests. putting students into the right level based on their language level
Progress tests. Used periodically to gauge what language has been remembered or acquired
Diagnostic tests. Similar to content placement test given to the student at the start of the course
Practice tests. to prepare students for external examinations
The most common external examinations that we need to prepare students for include, TOEFL, IELTS, and TOEIC. besides the general external examination mentioned above, we also have other external language assessments by Cambridge and Trinity College London. Under Cambridge Assessment, we have UK OCR, Cambridge ESOL. There are a number of different categories of Cambridge exams and they include; General English like KET, PET, FCE, CAE, CPE. Under business English, we have BEC and BULATS. Last but not least is under Trinity college London we have ESOL skills for life in the UK mainly designed to meet the needs of learners whom English is a second language and who have chosen to make life in the UK. This unit has expanded my knowledge of evaluating ans assessing students and also on the different kinds of tests or exams that the english leaners prepare for.
