In unit 9, a detailed explanation of coursebooks and materials are given to the teachers. It is explained that some teachers may prefer course books while other teachers may not. The coursebooks usually consist of a set of materials such as student's book, workbook, cassettes, teacher's book, other published materials like reading books graded to varying level of students, test books learner dictionaries, vocabulary flashcards among others. These both have their own advantages and disadvantages. The unit also elaborates on the four different options for course book use and they include, omit, replace supplement and adapt. Also when analyzing the coursebook the teacher needs to consider the following, price, availability, design, skills, difficulty, syllabus, topic, teacher's guide etc.
This unit just like the previous units, it's very important and I have read and conceptualized the materials covered.
The materials, on the other hand, can be divided into two groups: the authentic materials. Any material a native speaker would hear or read can be regarded as an authentic. for example programs, magazines, newspapers, songs, poems, brochures, menus, films on video among others are some of the examples of authentic materials. Because authentic materials are not designed for EFL students, they are not graded for levels, therefore, teachers need to carefully select them. The other part of the material id the created material. These are usually designed by the teacher to replace or supplement materials from a course book and they can be graded to the level of the student. Common created materials include crossword, word search puzzles, role-play cards, flashcards, gap fill activities, pictures etc.
