The receptive skills of language are reading and listening and these should be incorporated into every lesson to provide a balanced lesson. Receptive skills involve more than just seeing and hearing as we also use our minds to make sense of words through the context of our pre-existing knowledge of the world. There are various reasons and motives for both reading and listening but they fall into two broad categories of 1) achieving a specific aim or goal eg reading or listening to instructions and 2) enjoying various types of media for entertainment purposes but these can cross over. We use different skills for different purposes. We can skim information to get a general overview of a piece of text or dialogue. We can predict what something will be about through reading or listening to a headline or title; we can scan to obtain specific information; we can read or listen for detail or to deduce meaning from the context in which they are written or spoken in order to go beyond the literal meaning of words or phrases.
