This unit covered the use of coursebooks and lesson materials. It talked about the differences between authentic and created materials. Authentic materials are things that are not specifically created for EFL students but are good resources for supplementary work. Some of the disadvantages of authentic materials are that they are not graded for the specific level of the students and may not be topic specific for the lesson. Some of the advantages of authentic materials are that they can be motivating for the students since it is potentially what the student would actually hear or see in day to day life, and the teacher has more flexibility to choose topics that are more interesting for the students. Some of the advantages created materials and coursebooks are that they are graded for specific levels and provide more support for the teacher since the teacher does not have to generate his or her own materials. Some disadvantages are that the materials may not be specific for speakers of different languages and the content may not be interesting for students from different countries or regions. This unit also covered how a teacher might select a coursebook or different materials, as well as how the teacher could incorporate both authentic and created materials into an ESA lesson.
