Unit 3 Classroom Management
1. Eye contact, Gestures & Voice
These are to show students that all are involved in the lesson and to ensure that they understand. They encourage contributions and help maintain discipline. Vary tone of voice to avoid boredom.
2. Grouping students for pair work increases interaction and responsibility for work complete.
3. Classroom Arrangement consists of orderly rows for large classes, circles, separate tables and teacher’s position. Its suitability depends on the space available, age of students, nationality and personalities of students.
4. Writing on the board with back to class cannot be avoided but can be reduced by using OHP, cards and writing only in small sections. Individual attention can be encouraged by including students in any activity.
5. Teacher Talk Time (TTT) and Students Talk Time (STT). To increase STT and reduce TTT, use simple instruction avoiding jargon.
6. Giving instructions is effective if language used is simple, consistent and visual aids are used.
7. To establish rapport with students, start with an ice breaking activity with a new class. Choose activities where students talk to each other and work together. Get them to help and correct each other.
8. Maintain Discipline by being punctual, well prepared, consistent and fair. Do not let personal feelings influence your treatment of students. Try to make lessons interesting and varied.
9. To respond to problem behaviour, act immediately and focus on the behaviour, not the students. Keep calm and talk to the problem student after class.
