I am a special education teacher for 30 years. My specialization is teaching learning disabilities and attention deficit disorder students. In the last 5 years, I thought English lessons in my class at a junior high school.
As a brief of unit 3, I will describe my lessons and methods I used. At the beginning of the lessons, I and my assistant focused on the need of every student in the class to check if he was comfortable confident and relaxed. We checked the student's learning equipment: book, pencil, erase. This approach fits the Suggestopedia method.
The subject was acquiring reading and writing English. I started with Hicky Cards system. I was the resource of knowledge 'teacher-centered' lessons. Every lesson was with lots of repetition and drills. This system fits method Presentation, Practice, and production.
During the lessons every ten minutes max I changed the activity. I used many activities to eligible the students. This approach fits method Engage, Study, Activate.
The most difficult was the student's rejection to read loudly. I and my assistant and two young girls from the Voluntary Social Program heard individually every student. They were embarrassed to make a mistake. It took one year until the students acquired reading and writing. In the end, it was a great and interesting challenge to teach them English.
