In the previous unit, we learned about the receptive skills, reading and listening, and how to teach them. In this unit, we learn about the productive skills, speaking and writing, and how to teach them. According to this unit, most students of foreign languages want to improve their speaking skills the most and writing is often the most neglected skill. To help students practice both of these skills more, teachers must create a need and desire in the students to communicate. There are many activities we can utilize for students to practice these skills. Some activities are accuracy-based, meaning they emphasize using language and so are often teacher-guided activities. Other activities are fluency-based, meaning they emphasize students using the language freely and creatively and so are student-led. Within this unit, we are given many different ideas for activities we can use in the classroom and perhaps make our own or tailor to our individual students and we are offered sample straight arrow ESA lessons to help us get a better understanding of how to teach a creative communication lesson and a creative writing activity lesson. This unit in conjunction with unit 11 gives me a better understanding of how to build lessons around different skills.
