This lesson discussed the receptive skills, reading and listening. These are two of the four basic skills needed for learning a language. They began by discussing how receptive skills are more than just listening and looking. They require understanding in order to make meaning out of a string of words. They then discussed problems that occur with reading and listening such as using materials that are beyond a student’s language level. They then go into discussing how to teach a lesson with a text using the ESA method. One of the major things I gained from this lesson was the idea of comprehension tasks. These tasks allow students to get a better understanding of language by having them do tasks that promote understanding. I had never really thought about this when using a text or audio in class. I initially only thought about checking the students understanding of a text or audio and never going to doing such a task. This is a highly valuable technique I will be sure to use.
