In this unit we learned about books and materials we use in class. How authentic material (everything that is authentic from the language - newspaper, magazine text, a part of a film, a radio advertisement, etc)can be stimulating and when correctly chosen can empower the students with confidence on their level of English, normally brings more authenticity to the class and make the students more interested and engaged, but normally less suited to beginners. In the other hand, non-authentic material can be leveled up and more adapted to the level of the class and given the students less unknown vocabulary and structures.
Also, we learned about how books can be useful and how to use them in a proper way, omitting what is not relevant to the students without overdoing it (not to run the risk students will question why they bought the book whatsoever?), adapting the content for better usage of your class, supplementing when necessary, and replacing what is needed. We also receive some good examples of non-authentic material. We learned the advantages of having a course book, how it facilitates for the teacher, and how critical we always have to be when using them, always focusing on what our students really need and not exactly what the book brings in the sequence and in this way trying to adapt and match to the students needs.
