In this unit, the use of course materials was discussed as to how it may negatively or positively impact the effectiveness of a lesson. A teacher can use either authentic materials, or created materials in order to teach the language lesson. Authentic materials can be helpful for more advanced students and can help them feel confident in the language meanwhile keeping them interested in the material. Authentic materials include anything that was produced or used in a English speaking country, for example a menu from a restaurant or the transcription of a radio broadcast. Created materials are any materials that the teacher has produced in order to more specifically cater to the students comprehension level. These materials can be helpful because they are geared more specifically to the level of that group of students and can be tailored to teach the specific lesson/grammar points/vocabulary, etc. that the teacher is trying to convey. Coursebooks also have their advantages and disadvantages. They can offer a tried and effective syllabus as well as allowing students to see their ongoing progress with learning the language. However, an effective teacher should be able to use both coursebooks as well as created and authentic materials to supplement the lessons.
