Reading and listening - these are the two skills, receptive skills, that this units covers. There are four basic skills in any language and they are all equally important. People, in general, have different reasons for listening or reading materials. Some people read or listen for pleasure, entertainment for example, while others for specific purposes, like finding financial reports published in magazines, etc. People employ a number of specialist skills when reading or listening, and they will understand the context based on their expertise in the following areas: predictive skills, specific information (scanning), general idea (skimming), detailed information, deduction from context. It is also very important to have a good selection of texts in teaching, authentic and non-authentic texts. Pre-teaching vocabulary may be necessary if there are too many words that students do not know. The topics chosen must also create an interest in students. I have learnt in this unit that it is very important to select your texts carefully, to use texts that are interesting to students, to vary the type of materials, and to always keep in mind that all four skills are equally important.
