Teaching and learning of receptive skills present some potential problems. The length of sentences and words, as well as unfamiliar words, may be problematic to English learners. To combat these problems, the teacher may pre-teach difficult unknown structures before the reading and listening activity. He or she can also be very cautious when selecting listening and reading materials. To make the process a little easier, the teacher can choose texts or dialogues that are in sync with the students' interests and provide comprehension tasks that promote understanding as opposed to just checking it.
