Granby, New York TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This unit shows and explains different ways of evaluating students' level and progress in learning the English language. Some of the ways we as teachers can evaluate or assess our students' language level, include tutorials, evaluations by the students themselves and tests. Tutorials often involve reviewing completed work, discussing the aims of the lessons, seeing how well the students performed the task and pinpointing any problems. Student evaluations can include questionnaires or guided discussions about the course and course materials. Tests are a common method of assessment. Many different types of tests exist. Internal tests, done in the classroom, can include placement and diagnostic tests done at the beginning of the course to notify the teacher of the students' abilities before the class begins, and progress tests, which typically will be given over the course of the semester and will test students on concepts they studied in class to see how well they remember and understand these concepts. External exams, such as Cambridge Assessment or the TOEIC exam are not course related but claim to measure proficiency in English at varying levels. Many teachers help their students prepare for these non-course related external exams by giving the students practice tests based on the format of the external test they plan on taking. I like that this unit introduced various external exams that exist for non-native English learners and speakers and gave brief information about the format, purpose and popularity of each exam. I will have to prepare my ESL students for such external exams so this is good information to have.
