In this unit, we return to studying English grammar. The grammar topics covered in this unit include the different forms of conditional sentences and how to teach them in the classroom. Conditional sentences are sentences that contain if or similar expressions such as when, which can refer to past, present or future possibilities. There are five main conditionals: the zero conditional, the first conditional, the second conditional, the third conditional and mixed conditionals. Additionally, this unit covers direct and reported speech in English and how verb forms change when direct speech becomes reported speech. Conditional sentences, due to their complex forms, prove confusing for many ESL learners. This unit reminds ESL teachers to teach conditional forms slowly and carefully. It is also a good review, even for native speakers, as very few of us could list all of the conditional forms from memory or explain which verb forms change and how when reporting direct speech. I feel that the teaching ideas in this unit will prove helpful if I make a lesson plan on the conditional or incorporate conditional forms into one of my lessons. For example, during the activation part of an ESA lesson, playing a creative game, such as "What would happen if" and having students form groups in which they make and answer such questions may aid them in understanding and remembering conditional forms.
