It is helpful to be reminded, in this first unit, of the qualities necessary to be a good teacher. Patience, kindness, motivation, rapport with students and sound subject knowledge, are all good qualities of a teacher. The role of a teacher depends on the class, the subject and the activity. Knowing when to support or extend a child by prompting, is as important as knowing when to provide feedback, or to model a word or phrase for them. Always, we must remember that the student is taking a risk and that we should be careful not to offend or discourage them from trying when we assess them. Being able to switch roles during a lesson is a valuable skill, as sometimes when we are participating with one group, we cannot monitor the whole class, and may need to switch to manager, or assessor for another group. Understanding what makes a good learner, is to be aware of the traits we want to encourage such as the desire to ask questions, to experiment with language, to show a willingness to listen to, and learn a language.
