Teaching productive skills, such as writing and speaking, requires the teacher to use multiple methods and techniques to achieve the desired result. Speaking skills can be used in order to practice accuracy or fluency. Accuracy-based activities are guided by the teacher and are generally used in the study phase of the lesson. These can include controlled and guided activities. Fluency based activities are generally introduced and monitored by the teacher, but students control the output of language. These activities generally happen during the Activate phase of the lesson and include creative communication activities such as role plays and simulations. It is important for teachers to encourage students to speak and to have an effective grip on what the students are struggling with in terms of pronunciation, hesitations to speak, or reoccurring errors. Writing is also an important skill and may take much guided effort from the teacher, especially if students are required to learn a completely different alphabet.
