This unit introduced the idea of verb tenses as a whole and, more specifically, the present tense. English as a Foreign Language teachers generally divide verb tenses into three time periods (past, present, and future) and four aspects (simple, continuous, perfect, and perfect continuous), which creates twelve total tenses. In the present simple, the base form of the verb is used to create the statement. In present continuous, the verb is used with the -ing ending and preceded by some form of "be." In present perfect, the past participle is actually used with some form of "have" to make it a sentence in the present. In the last form discussed in this unit, the present perfect continuous, one has to use "have," then "been," and finally the verb with the -ing ending. The technicalities of structuring sentences using each tense may be challenging for new learners.
