Teachers can manage their classrooms in order to create a positive, encouraging environment for student learning. Teachers can be intention with their instructions, classroom arrangement, and student-teacher relationship. It's important that teachers balance Teacher Talk Time with Student Talk Time to ensure that students learn from a native English speaker, but also get to experiment with the language themselves. Teachers can manage this by giving clear, simple directions in English with the use of visual aids. This allows students to be exposed to the language while allowing them to succeed in the planned activities which allow them to use the language themselves. A balance of whole-class, individual, and small group pairings can be used to encourage a sense of belonging while also allowing all students to participate in the classes. Teachers must also be aware of how the organization of the classroom affects the class dynamics. A balance should be struck which allows for full group participation as well as individual learning. It's also important to be mindful of the teacher's position within this organization so as to allow the teacher to manage how much control is necessary for the given activity. Teachers should not be too dominant or too passive. In the same vein it's important that teachers establish rapport and give discipline in a way that allows for a respectful relationship between students and the teacher. Teachers should be approachable and generally like-able while also establishing enough authority to effectively but politely prevent or discipline poor behavior. Simple things such as being punctual, smiling, being prepared, and listening to the students will help establish the respect needed for an effective learning environment.
