Unit 7 gives a breakdown of how to teach new language, which means teaching students new vocabulary words, grammatical structures and language functions. There are 4 key things students need to do with new language: be exposed to it, understand its meaning, and understand how its constructed and be able to practice and produce it. This unit especially focues on common ESA methods of teaching new language, such as using the "straight-arrow approach" for lessons targeted towards grammar or vocabulary and using the "bommerang" or "patchwork" approach for function-based lessons. Overall, I found this unit helpful in that it gives clear examples of how to apply the ESA method to teaching various aspects of language. For example, some techniques for introducing grammatical structures include scenario building during the engage phase, doing gap-fills during the study phase and making use of communication games or role-play during the activtate phase. One sample lessons includes having students write about films or books using the simple past tense. Additionally, this unit explains the most important things students must know about new language. For example, regarding grammatical structures, students must know the meaning, use and form or pattern of the new structure. Knowing the best techniques for each aspect of language one is teaching proves crucial in the ESL classroom, as it can make the learning process move more smoothly, quickly and effectively.
