There are a variety of methods available to teach English. These methods vary from direct translation to more free-form discussions in English. Overall, a combination of methods is best to ensure that students receive a high level of exposure to the language and have the opportunity to use the language for themselves, with guidance from the teacher.
The best strategy for incorporating this exposure and use of the language is through the Engage, Study, Activate approach. In the Engage stage, all students are encouraged to participate in the activity (which should be of interest to them). This allows students to begin thinking in English and feel more ready to learn. The Study phase is focused on developing the students' knowledge of the language and may include activities such as drilling, grammar analysis, or worksheets. The Activate phase allows students to incorporate their newly acquired knowledge with their already existing foundation of the language. Lesson plans can incorporate this stages in a variety of ways to keep students engaged and learning.
It's important for language teachers to be mindful of when and how they give feedback. Students should not only be made aware of when they make a mistake, but also praised for using the language correctly. It's important for teachers to be aware of cultural sensitivities when making corrections and to make corrections in a way that is encouraging and empowering for their students.
