In this unit, I was required to watch two video lessons. In the first lesson, the rapport between the students and the teacher was not a good one. The teacher did not enter the room and make his students feel welcome as he did not greet them or introduce himself. It was evident that the teacher did not plan beforehand for his students, as he shuffled through papers and wrote words on the board haphazardly. The teacher was not very motivating towards his students either as he would make smart comments when students did not give the answer that he would have liked. As a result, the students were disengaged, uninterested and demotivated.
In the second lesson, the teacher was more friendly as he greeted his students, wrote his name on the board and gave students the opportunity to briefly introduce themselves. The teacher was more prepared as he already wrote on the board prior to the beginning of class. The teacher acted as a prompter allowing the students to think for themselves along the lines of the topic being taught. I feel as if the students were more engaged because of the environment that the teacher created by just simply meeting and greeting. He motivated his students by commending them when they answered questions which in turn made them want to answer questions or even attempt to do so. The teacher also used coloured markers to highlight different texts that he probably deemed to be important.
It is safe to say that a good teacher prepares for and caters for his/her learners, motivates them and creates an environment that makes students want to learn.
