This unit focuses on the importance of classroom management when teaching English as a foreign language. Classroom management is defined as the skill of organizing and managing the class, having a friendly, relaxed manner, and maintaining discipline. The teacher's appropriate use of eye contact, gesture and the voice can aid in managing the class. I think this unit is a vital portion of this course, as many new teachers spend a great deal of time thinking about the subject they teach and how best to teach it, while neglecting how seemingly small details, like the arrangement of the classroom and organization of activties, could have a drastic impact on the class's ability to learn. This unit reminds me to consider dyanmics such as student personality, nationality and age in the classroom as well as the space and size of the class. By laying out the pros and cons of group work, pair work, individual work and work involving the whole class, this unit has taught me how to better organize my future lesson plans and activties. Furthermore, this unit presents many ideas for establishing rapport with students and maintaining discipline, such as allowing students to correct each other, giving clear instructions and being aware of reasons for proble, behavior and how to prevent and respond to such behavior.
