This unit provides an overview of the important roles that both the teacher and the learner play in the learning process. This is because each has to have certain characteristics to make learning a success. On the part of the teacher, patience and understanding are personal characteristics that need to be present be able to reach out to the students especially since students are different from one another--be it in terms of age, learning experience, and motivation. Aside from personal characteristics, knowledge and skills are musts that the teacher should possess, as he/she serves as a resource person to the learners. Another important facet of a teacher is the ability to adjust in the different roles he/she has to play depending on the situation--be it as a manager, a prompter, a participant, a facilitator, or an assessor. As for the student, it is also important that motivation or the reason for wanting to learn is present--be it a simple interest in the English language or as a means to an end--to live in an English-speaking country, for further education or for career reasons. It is also important that the learner possesses an open-mind to accept corrections, and a genuine interest to learn (by asking questions and participating in class) to get the most out of the learning experience.
