This unit focuses on teaching productive skills successfully. Productive skills are speaking and writing. Both are used to communicate and are equally important to language development. The two activities required to ensure progress in productive skills are accuracy and fluency activities. These activities are done at different times in the lesson. Accuracy skills typically are taught in the study phase and are required to have an accurate reproduction of the language. Fluency skills, usually a part of the activate phase, allow the students to experiment with the language. Speaking activities in the classroom can be controlled or guided, the difference is in the control of language. In a controlled activity, the teach has control over the output and vocabulary, but in a guided activity the control goes to the student. Similar to having students interact in class, there also has to be necessary encouragements in the lessons for students to feel comfortable and ready to participate. Writing skills focus on handwriting, spelling, layout and punctuation. The productive skills require preparation time so that the students can feel secure in their responses and interactions. A way to help boost interest and skills is to have creative writing and speaking lessons for the students and to give encouraging feedback when appropriate.
