Whether to use the course books to teach or not can be a complex and emotive issue for many teachers. For many students, materials created by the teacher are more interesting than from the course book. These materials can be divided into 2 groups: Authentic materials and Created materials. Both have its pros and cons, therefore, the teachers should choose carefully what materials to use to gain the best use of these materials.
Course books usually consist of a set of materials: student’s book, workbook, cassettes, teacher’s book, videos, etc. There are also many pros and cons towards course books. However, as a teacher, we should be critical of the material from the course book to make the best use of it. Four different options for course book use are: omit, replace, supplement and adapt. If we have to choose the course book for a class, we should consider these factors: price, availability, design of the book, the methodology which balance Study and Activation, the balance of skills, difficulty, syllabus, relevant and interesting topics, the teacher’s guide and the ancillary materials.
