This unit briefly introduced the two different types of language skills, receptive and productive. This unit only covered the two productive skills, reading and listening. While reading and listening can have different functions and can vary in difficulty depending on the student, they are both equally important. Reading can be challenging but students do have the advantage of the fact that the language is "captured" on the page, that is they can return to it and read it as many times as they need to in order to think about it and understand the meaning. With listening, however, students do not have that benefit and they will only have a few short seconds to pick up the language being produced by the speaker and process it. This unit also covered some of the specialist skills needed to excel in the receptive skills such as skimming for general information, scanning for specific information, predicting content, and understanding past the literal meaning with help of context and pre-existing knowledge. Finally, this unit gave some examples of materials to use and ESA lesson plans that can be used for teaching reading and listening skills, which I found to be very useful.
