The system and structure of past tenses is a bit similar to present tenses (regarding in usage and form emerging). However, the past tenses obviously relate to past time periods. This lesson goes through the past simple, past continuous, past perfect, past perfect continuous and their form, usages, common mistakes/errors and the sample activate teaching ideas. Past simple involves the subject and an irregular verb or regular verb with ‘d’ or ‘ed’ on the end. We use the past simple to talk about actions completed at a definite time in the past. Past continuous entails what the subject is doing, therefore is built upon the subject, was/were + V-ing at the end. We use the past continuous to say what we were in the middle of doing at a particular moment in the past. For past perfect, we use ‘had’ + V-pp. We use the past perfect tense to emphasize that an action in the past finished before another action in the past started. Past perfect continuous is to talk about longer actions in the past that ‘had been going’ on continuously up to the past moment that we are thinking about. The common mistakes/errors that the students usually have is the confusion with other tenses or the use of auxiliary verbs, ‘to be’, irregular verbs, -ing, etc. For different tenses, we can create and organize appropriate activities or games for the students such as role-play, telling stories or detective game.
