Because my BA was in language studies, it carried a heavy course load of linguistics; this unit was very interesting to me, and definitely recalled a lot of the work I have done previously in my phonology classes. Because those classes were about phonology in general and not officially applied to any language, it was very useful for me to see exactly how phonology can be applied to English in order to be able to teach it to ESL students. This unit began by briefly discussing what phonology is and why it tends to be a difficult subject that many ESL teachers tend to avoid. It then went on to discuss intonation, some general rules for intonation in English such as the rise/fall structure of a normal English sentence. It also covered where there is likely to be difficulty in teaching intonation and some ways that teachers can facilitate it for the students. It then went over stress and where stress falls in various words and sentences. There were also some examples of this can best be presented to students, which I found helpful. That last part centered around pronunciation. I found reviewing the terminology associated with pronunciation, such as the areas of articulation, to be very helpful. I also found a quick review of the IPA chart to be useful, as I haven't worked much with it since completing the linguistics requirements of my bachelor's degree.
