Each word in a sentence can be further classified, according to its purpose and the meaning it adds. This is called 'parts of speech'. The simplest form of a sentence must consist of at least a subject and verb. A sentence includes a number of words, which play role in the sentence and can be classified as: nouns, adjectives, articles, verbs, adverbs, gerunds, pronouns, prepositions and conjunctions. Identifying the role can help us ensure the grammar of a sentence.
There are differences among nouns, pronouns and gerund. A noun are words that denote people, places, things, qualities, and states, while pronouns take the place of a noun in a sentence. Besides, a gerund is the V-ing form, which function as a noun.
Adjectives, adverbs and verbs are also dissimilar. Adjectives modify nouns or pronouns, while adverbs modify verbs, adjectives and other adverbs. When we use a group of adjectives at the same time, it should be in an order: opinion (beautiful) -> size (big) -> age (new) -> shape (square) -> color (green) -> material (glass). Verbs are action words and can refer to states. Verbs can either be transitive (followed by an object) or intransitive (stand-alone).
There are only 3 articles (a, an, the) in English. They come before a noun or a noun phrase in a sentence. We use the article “the” if we are referring to a particular or specific noun and we use indefinite articles (a, an) if we are talking about any member of a group. In addition, indefinite articles are only used with singular nouns.
Prepositions are to indicate the relationship of a noun or a pronoun to another word. There are 3 major types namely: prepositions of place, time, and movement. Conjunctions are used to connect two words, phrases, clauses or sentences together.
