This unit goes through different ways of evaluating students’ levels and progress, as well as some of the common external exams that the teachers may need to prepare our students for. There are some ways to assess a student’s language level: tutorials, evaluation by the students and tests.
Teachers can conduct individual (not always possible) tutorials or small group tutorials to assess what has been done in class and address any problems. Students can evaluate the course through a questionnaire or survey. It can also be done by means of a guided discussion.
There are many different types of exams that teachers can use: placement tests, diagnostic tests, progress tests, practice tests, external examinations (TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC, etc) or Cambridge assessments (KET, PET, etc.). Teacher’s choosing which type of test to use depends on our purpose (place the student into the appropriate level or class / review / identify problems / etc.). In addition, there are also some reasons for students who study for external tests (for study/work/immigration purposes, etc.).
