In this lesson I learned about receptive skills. The two receptive skills are reading and listening. There are two purposes for receptive skills, one is for finding a purpose and the other is for entertainment. This unit included different categories of receptive skills, what are some issues when teaching these skills and methods of teaching according to these skills. Types of receptive skills includes Scanning which is to read for specific information and Detailed Information which is to understand every detail. One issue with using detailed information is that the student can get caught up when looking at each word as its own unit instead of linking all the words together to find the main idea. A good way to introduce new vocabulary to the student is to pre-teach it before the assignment is given. This is to prepare and engage the student in reading and listing receptive skills before they look at a dialogue or text.
