Unit 1 provided me with a good framework for reflecting and discussing about the different qualities that good teachers and learners should have in general. It also presented a comprehensive list of the roles a teacher might have during a typical lesson while emphasizing the importance of being knowledgeable about how to carry them out effectively, depending on the what one wishes the students to achieve. Moreover, a good teacher should be able to switch between different roles, in accordance with the type of activity.
Learners are differentiated according to their age: adults and three categories of young learners.
These categories are important because the learning process and in-class experience varies significantly with age. In my own experience as a Maths teacher, age is definitely the most important factor to take into account when planning lessons.
A good teacher must also be aware of how learning is usually approached in the student's cultural context, what is the motivation of each student for attending English classes, and what is the current level of ability in the English language, from beginner to advanced.
In conclusion, the relationship between learners and teachers is a very important and complex issue. Unit 1 presents some basic concepts and categories, a simple ontology if you will, that will help "an enthusiastic, sensitive, motivated, and caring teacher" to have successful students.
