This unit focused on teaching pronunciation and phonology. When teaching pronunciation (which was the most underserved area according to the article) it is important to consider the stress, rhythm, and intonation of words. Intonation is the variation in volume and pitch in a sentence, and we use rise/fall intonation for normal patterns of speech, and fall/rise when the speaker wants the audience to respond. A good activity would be to have students say back a bunch of nonsense words, but change the message of the speech using different intonations. Stress indicates how the sentence should be interpreted, and any sentence could mean a variety of things based on the stressed word. Clapping techniques help students discover stress placement. Finally, articulation plays a key role in helping students sound out the actual word. The unit has an amazing chart for the different parts of the mouth in action when speaking different words. It also has the phonetic alphabet which would be a good thing to have up somewhere in the classroom.
