I found this unit to be a very useful one for aiding in my understanding of managing a classroom and even lesson planning. This unit focused on the various types of equipment and teaching aids that can be used in an ESL classroom. It mentioned the normal use of each, how to get the maximum benefit from it, and some pros and cons of each type of teaching aid. Primarily this unit focused on boards (whether whiteboard, chalkboard, or IWB - interactive white boards), overhead projectors, visual aids, worksheets/cards, cassette and CD players, videos and DVDs, dictionaries and other resource books, course books (which were covered in depth in a previous unit), photocopiers, and computers and online resources. Many of these things I was familiar with from my own time as a language student, such as a whiteboard, an overhead projector, worksheets/cards and the various types of books. Some of these were, however, new to me such as the use of computers in an ESL classroom as well as the IWB that was just barely being implemented as I was leaving school. Overall I feel that I am leaving this unit with a much more comprehensive idea of the tools and materials involved in English language teaching, and a better idea of how each can be used in your lesson plan to maximise learning.
