This unit covers the grammar of conditionals and reported speech.
Conditionals are sentences containing ‘if' (or similar expressions such as ‘when') which refer to past, present and future possibilities. There are five main conditionals: zero conditional, first conditional, second conditional, third conditional and mixed conditional. Each of them has different form and usage. However, students usually confuse between the first and second conditions, and the third and mixed conditionals. In order to help students to learn effectively, teachers should apply some of the following teaching ideas: split sentences, complete the conditional, chain conditionals, What a question!, nuclear bunker role play, and what would happen if…?
Reported speech is also known as indirect speech. It is used with an aim to report direct speech. When we report direct speeches, we need to change the verb tenses, pronouns, time expressions, physical position and in some cases the verbs. There are many potential mistakes, errors and general difficulty due to the number of changes that are made with verb tenses, patterns, pronouns, questions, time expressions, etc. The ‘golden rule' for teachers with all the different categories is to take each one at a time and to do it slowly and thoroughly.
