In this study unit we learned about modals, phrasal verbs and the passive voice.
In the modal auxiliary verbs section we covered the basic rules of usage, function, and form. In addition to the study unit, the video presentation briefly covered the semi-modal auxiliary verbs as well as student difficulties with modal auxiliary verbs. The study unit also provides a few teaching ideas that could be used to help assist teaching modal auxiliary verbs to students.
In the passive voice section we looked at the difference between active voice and passive voice. We studied the form, structure and usage of the passive voice. We also took into account common student errors/mistakes or difficulties students might have when learning the passive voice. In addition to this the study unit and video presentation discusses a few helpful teaching ideas.
Lastly we looked at relative clauses and phrasal verbs. We looked at the different kind of relative clauses as well as the different kind of phrasal verbs.
This section of the english grammar pose a challenge to teaching and learning - students struggle more with these units of grammar because they are more challenging. However teachers should expose their students to these grammar units, to set a foundation, by slowly and gradually introduce each of these grammar units into their lessons. Exposing students to the language first and then with time follow up with a study and activity when the teacher judge the students to be ready.
