Unit 18 covered the topics of modal auxiliary verbs and passive voice in detail in addition to an overview of phrasal verbs and relative clauses. The unit started with a discussion of modal auxiliary verbs which included basic rules, there forms, and teaching ideas for teaching modal auxiliary verbs in the classroom. This was followed by a discussion on passive voice. It covered the difference between active and passive voice, forms of passive voice as associated with tenses, their usage and common mistakes/errors experienced by the student and teaching ideas for teaching passive voice in the classroom. Next, the lesson covered relative clauses and phrasal verbs. It discussed the difference between independent, dependent and relative clauses and how relative clauses are used. This lesson taught me that the use of modal auxiliary verbs and phrasal verbs are key for the student to understand in order for the to speak more like a native speaker. However, students may have difficulty understanding how to correctly use these verbs in spoken and written communication. Furthermore, passive voice is needs to be taught to the student but again may be difficult for the student to understand and use. Therefore, the teacher needs to prepare well thought out lesson plans when teaching these parts of grammar and needs to regularly review these grammar points in the classroom.
