In this study unit I learned about the proper and appropriate use/ application of course books, additional resources and lesson materials.
I learned that there are various factors to consider in order to keep students engaged, interested and motivated with the lessons and activities. First and foremost, the material used in the classroom should be relevant, up to date, interesting and cover various topics that appeal to the students. It is therefore important that the teacher makes use of authentic and created resources. There are various benefits to using authentic and created resources, such as: it creates variety, can be topic or group specific, and can increases students confidence when working with authentic materials.
When making use of a course book teacher need to take care not to become too reliant and lazy when creating a lesson. Course books are beneficial as they are designed to progress systematically through language teaching, it a syllabus, can easily be graded and offers create teaching ideas and activities. However a course book is a guide and assist the teaching and learning process, it is not sufficient on it own. Thus teacher need to make use of additional resources and evaluate their course book in order to adapt, omit, replace and supplement material where needed in order to keep the lessons and the materials interesting and relevant.
