This unit covered teaching receptive skills (reading and listening). The unit started with reasons for reading and listening (for information or entertainment) and then covered the ways in which a person reads or listens including scanning, skimming, deduction from context and reading for details. Next, the unit discussed potential problems with teaching or learning language. The unit discussed way that language problems can be avoided which include pre-teaching vocabulary and selecting a text (authentic text vs. non-authentic text). In addition, the teacher needs to choose texts that interest the student, create interest and promote understanding of the text through the tasks that are used. A sample lesson plan using the patchwork approach was presented as an example of how to teach reading and listening skills.
I learned that all skills are important whether receptive or productive skills and that any lesson should strive to incorporate both in order to be balanced. Also, I learned that a successful receptive skill lesson should use material that is interesting and motivates the student, that builds interest, incorporates pre-teaching vocabulary, uses a mixture of materials to practice skills, and uses realistic comprehension tasks.
