In this study unit we learned about teaching receptive skills - reading and listening.
We learned about the importance of teaching receptive and productive skills as part of teaching a new language. We also learned about the reasons and motives for utilising receptive skills - thus at times a person may read and/or listen to something with intent/ purpose, and at other times it might be for pure pleasure and entertainment. However, we notice that people may also mix these two motives and can thus read and listen for pleasure and purpose.
When teaching receptive skills we learned that there are various factors to consider in order for it to be effective. Teachers need to take into account the students language level and interests. In doing so the teacher can carefully select appropriate material on various topics that will interest all the students, which in return will motivate the students participation in the lesson. We also learned that the teacher needs to take care in creating tasks and activities that will enhance the students comprehension and understanding of the reading and listening material. The teacher also needs to bare in mind that when using more advanced or authentic material, the teacher should pre-teach only the most essential vocabulary to assist the students understanding to ensure comprehension.
