In this unit, I learned about the importance of teaching pronunciation and phonology to students. Teaching pronunciation is difficult, but it is necessary to help students express their thoughts and feelings into words. Having stress and intonation provides a window into the speaker's intentions. Different places of stress and intonation can also convey a different tone to the speaker's voice. Phonology is also important as it can help students to understand how a word is supposed to sound and how it is produced. Understanding the phonetic alphabet can become a huge help for learners of the English language as it can guide students on how to produce or read a sound in English if they can understand the phonetics written in the dictionary to show how a word sounds.
In this unit, I also learned how to read the phonetic alphabet. Certain sounds can be explained better using the IPA rather than the English spelling as the pronunciation to certain words do not always follow the way it is spelt. I also learned how to explain how certain sounds are produced and figured out where the place of articulation and the manner of articulation of certain sounds are. Pronunciation and phonology may be difficult to teach, but I believe that knowing how to go about teaching these concepts will help students a lot in their English learning.
