In this unit, we learned about the receptive skills: reading and listening. These two skills are commonly used either for a purpose, or for entertainment. There are many skills we need to read and listen, such as having a good predictive ability, specific information scanning, general idea skimming, detailed information understanding, and deduction from context. However, theses skills are not the only things we need to have good receptive skills. Good receptive skills are also highly dependent on how we teach and choose our text, as well as how we create interest in the topic for the students and how we organize the tasks for them to learn.
I learned that in order to have good receptive skills, we need to be careful about how we present the information to the students and how we go about teaching it. It is important to try to make the lesson as interesting as possible, in order to make it easier for students to stay alert and attentive during class.
