In this study unit we covered the various teaching theories, methodologies and techniques used in Language Teaching.
We learned that each of these theories and methodologies have their own pro's and con's, and that there is no single best methodology or theory. Instead we learned that combining these theories, methodologies and techniques help establish and foster a diverse teaching and learning culture suitable for all students in the classroom. And most importantly that there are influential variables which will determine the most appropriate method and theory to use in the classroom.
According to this unit the preferred and ultimate methodology is the Engage, Study and Activate method which was put forward by Jeremy Harmer. This methods utilises the various methods and theories, combined and structured in three phases/ elements - The Engage Stage: getting the students interested and involved with the lesson; The Study Stage: getting the students focussed on the construction of the language; The Activate Stage: students practice, present and demonstrate their use of the language and the new learning content in a free communicative style.
We also learned about the various Engage, Study and Activate lesson structures that can be used when planning and preparing for a lesson.
Lastly we covered the various techniques and activities that can be used in the Engage, Study and Activate stages, as well as the correct techniques and procedures for giving feedback and correcting a students work.
