Unit 10 was a video lesson and featured two video lessons. The first lesson demonstrated a poorly executed lesson for several reasons. First, the attitude of the teacher negatively affected the way students interacted with the teacher. The teacher came across of harsh, judgmental and critical of students. This affected the willingness of student to participate in class. Next, the teacher did not clearly explain the grammar concept to be covered nor the activities used to teach the grammar concept. The students seemed confused and did not understand the grammar concept being taught and had difficulty understanding what to do during the activities. The teacher appeared visibly flustered and frustrated with the students blaming them for their lack of understanding. In the second video, the teacher's pleasant and enthusiastic attitude towards the students made a dramatic difference in the atmosphere of the class and the energy the students had throughout the class. Also, the teacher clearly explained the grammar concept to be taught, clearly explained each activity and made sure the students his directions prior to initiating an activity. The teacher was encouraging and used smiles to encourage his students and to provide an atmosphere that was non-threatening and conducive to learning. The teacher used a straight arrow teaching approach with well-defined transitions between activities and lesson stages. I learned that a well thought out lesson plan with a clear explanation of the of the key grammar point and clearly explained activities will create an atmosphere conducive to learning. Also, the attitude of the teacher is very important in the way the students will respond during a lesson and will set the tone for the entire lesson.
