The unit talks about the teaching pronunciation and phonology. What is the definition of pronunciation, phonology and intonation. There are three intonation patterns: the rise/fall intonation, fall/rise intonation and flat intonation. They can be powerful predictors of the nature of forthcoming information. The techniques for indicating and teaching intonation are: nonsense words, bu gesture, humming or singing and the board. There are some basic rules of word stress in English. The strong part is the stress word, or word that bears the principal emphasis in the sentence. Some words of Auxiliary verbs, Articles, pronouns and propositions are normally unstressed. There are four major ways that sounds join together. They are linking, sound dropping, sound changing and extra lettering. It is very important to look at the International Phonemic Alphabet chart when students are familiar with this alphabet, they should be able to pronounce any word in the dictionary. The chart of the manner and place of articulation shows the consonants, the most important expressions to know for manner of articulation are: plosives, fricatives, affricates and nasals.
