This units discussed the characteristics of what makes a good teacher, the roles of the teacher, the characteristics of a good student, factors that effect the ability of the student to learn and the motivation for learning English. In addition, the unit discussed the different levels of ability of the language learner and compared them with the standards used by the Council of European States. I feel that I have learned that the teacher must care more about his/her students than him or her self and the material being taught. Also, I have learned that the teacher must take on different roles throughout the lesson depending on the activity and the goal of the activity. For example, if the teacher wants to observe how well his students are able to speak about a certain topic, the teacher may take the role of monitor and listen the the students discuss a topic from a distance. If he is communicating information such as the use of simple past tense, he my take the role of controller and be providing instruction at the front of the class. Lastly, I learned that the teacher must understand the factors that effect the ability of the learner to learn English. For example, the student's age, previous learning experiences, nervousness, his/her cultural and native language all affect the way he/she will approach learning English as a foreign or second language.
