Valley City, North Dakota TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
In this unit, the differences between a good lesson and a bad lesson was observed. The first lesson revealed how an ineffective lesson proceeds when the teacher does not put effort into helping the students understand the lesson objectives. The teacher came late, did not explain clearly, spoke too fast, and didn't respect the students or ask their names. He did not follow a lesson plan or an ESA method in his teaching, disregarding students when they made mistakes, and quickly leaving before the students when he was done teaching. Unlike the first lesson, the second video showed an example of a good way of teaching. The teacher was in class on time, introduced himself and asked the students their names, and called on them during class. He made sure to speak slowly and clearly, and explained the grammar points clearly. He ensured the students understood his instructions before proceeding, and involved all the students in his activities, even joining in on the bingo game at the end. The teacher in the second video made a clear lesson plan and brought all the teaching aids he needed, making the class proceed smoothly and successfully.
I learned that a teacher must be prepared for his/her lessons in order to ensure that the class proceeds smoothly. If a teacher makes a good lesson plan and is flexible to the students' needs, the class will be more involved and participate more willingly. From the videos, I also found that using a coherent outline for your class is important to make it easier to navigate the class towards the direction you want it to go. The teacher plays an important role in the class, and it is up to us to create a comfortable environment for students to learn in.
