In this unit, the different types of classes and groups of students that teachers can get and their characteristics were explored. Beginners range between being an absolute beginner, a false beginner, an adult beginner, a young beginner, and a beginner without Roman alphabet. All of these types of beginners have a varied background in English, and require clear instructions and an engaging teaching method to help them learn the English language. It is important to take into consideration each individual's needs, and to be able to balance the class's progress in learning without neglecting each student's needs. Teaching individual students is also different from teaching in a group, and teaching children is also vastly different from teaching adults. There may also be situations where you teach a monolingual class as compared to a multilingual class, or vice versa. In all these kinds of situations, it is important to be able to consider each of the circumstances the students are in and to adapt to their needs so they can learn the language more effectively.
From this unit, I learned that there are a lot of different types of students that we can meet throughout our teaching career. As such, it is of great importance to be able to understand how to transfer our knowledge of English to them to the best of our ability using the resources we have. In order to teach well, we have to teach not only with our brains, but with our hearts too.
