In this study unit I learned about evaluating and testing students language level.
According to this unit there are three ways to assess a students language level:
1. by means of tutorials with the whole group or individual students (reviewing/ recapping on work, progress report/ feedback, target/ problem areas to improve).
2. Evaluation by student (student gives feedback on their experience of the course, i.e. room for improvement? ability to participate in the lessons? level difficulty? etc. Thus enables the teacher to become more aware of the students experience, needs and learning styles.)
3. Testing (testing students language level, skills and abilities; testing students progress; preparing students for exams).
There are several different tests that teacher can use for various reasons. Teachers test their students in order to evaluate a students progress, or to establish a students language level/ability. To name a few of these test; the placement tests, diagnostic tests, progress tests, practice tests, external exams. Each of these test serve a specific function:
The placement and diagnostic test are similar in that both test a students current language level before commencing with a course, therefore to place the student in the correct language group. The only difference between is that the diagnostic test is more extensive and aims to recognise the students strengths and weaknesses in order to create lesson that will help further develop and improve the students struggling areas.
The progress test is used to evaluate the students progress throughout the course, thus monitor the students progress and identifying areas that need attention. The structure and interval of this test depends greatly on the teacher and/or the schools requirements: a progress test can be formal or informal in nature and at various or regular internals.
The practice test is usually used to help students prepare for final/ external exams. They can also demonstrate the students progress, but the main objective is to prepare students for an exam format test.
